Help stop the spread of marine pests
The shipping industry (including vessel operators and port authorities) has an important role in Australia's fight against marine pests.
If you are an operator of a commercial vessel, you can help prevent the spread of marine pests in Australia by implementing the following measures:
- managing ballast water according to Australia’s mandatory ballast water management requirements. Victoria also has ballast water requirements. More information on managing ballast water in Australia
- minimising the amount of biofouling on vessels through a high standard of vessel cleaning and maintenance. Guidelines are now available to assist vessel operators manage biofouling. More information on managing biofouling on commercial vessels.
These measures form part of the National System for the Prevention and Management of Marine Pest Incursions.
Working together to stop the spread
The commercial shipping sector is not alone in taking measures to prevent the introduction and spread of marine pests in Australian coastal waters.
The petroleum production and exploration industry and the non-trading vessel, fishing, aquaculture and recreational boating sectors are implementing similar measures suited to their vessel types and operating profiles. All marine sectors have a role in stopping the spread of marine pests.
